Aal Izz Well

Here is a story that my mom recently told me, about her colleague from bank. I do not have the name of this lady or her son, who is apparently the hero of this story. Infact, I don't even feel it is necessary, so here goes.

So, one of my mom's friend has a son who is like 4 -5 years old now. He is the only son and like many others, a very very naughty one. He hardly listens to his parents and has made their life miserable. One other thing that he absolutely hates is 'injections' and she was telling my mom that the last time he took an injection he cried, screamed, screeched and created a horrific scene at the nursing home.

Recently this kid was playing in the compound of their building and fell down. He had bruised his left knee and was in some pain. So, she took him to the nursing home again. The doctor cleaned his wounds and he just cried a little bit, which was understandable. But the doctor told her that it was better that they administer him a dose of 'tetanus' injection, since he had fallen over some mud and the injury was prone to further infections. The mention of the word 'injection' sent tremors through the mothers' heart. Her husband had joined in by then and they both got themselves ready for the terror that was to follow.

The parents tried to come up with various techniques to counter their child's tantrums and it was upto the the dad to give the news of the injection to his son. He slowly and lovingly told his son that to avoid any disease or any germs from entering his body, the doctors had to give him the injection. To his surprise, the boy did not react. The parents thought that tantrums would come once the injection was ready.

The boy was asked to lie down on his left side and face the wall, as the injection was to be administered to his butt. He did that quietly. The parents were amazed, they wondered why he wasn't reacting. The mom couldn't hold on any longer. She went up to the kid and heard him murmur something to himself. He went around to see what he was doing and to her shock, he had held his right hand up to his heart. He was tapping it and was saying, "Aal izz well, all iz well, aal izz well"

The doctor gave the injection and the boy walked out quietly, only complaining that the doctor was not a nice man!!

The next day saw the mom marketing the movie '3 idiots' as if it was her own production. She was so happy that Aamir Khan had made a positive influence on her son's life and was recommending the movie so much that my mom, almost after a decade, went to see the movie in a theater.

Such is the power of movies. They can inspire the people of a nation to think and act differently. I looked back and realized that when we were growing up, back in the late 90's, a vast majority of the movies being made came from the stables of Govinda, David Dhawan and likes. No wonder we turned out to be like this!!

But with a growing trend of good movies being made, like 3 Idiots, Swades, Rang de basanti etc....we can hope that the future of this country will be much better off than us.
