Spell Drill

Dear Kapish,

This is my usual practice of writing a blog for you while I am traveling, but this time it is again about an interesting activity from your school 

Lately, we have seen the rise of a competition called 'Spell Bee' where kids are asked to spell out complex words depending on the pronunciation, origin and use of vowels. As per my knowledge, this was primarily driven out of schools in US and very soon became a prominent feature of schools in India and other parts of the world as well - Valistus was not to be left behind and came up with a similar Inter-tribe competition called the 'Spell Drill'

Now, while this is just a competition, we need to focus on the fundamental goal and that is to improve the childs' language skills and help them read and eventually also write better

So, as a practice, Valistus would publish a 'Word Wall' each month and we had to make sure you learn these words as we progress. However, they also conducted an Inter-Tribe competition and we got a note that you have qualified for the Final rounds of the Spell Drill for Hope Tribe - the list of words you had to learn was difficult, at best, for a 6 year old - but you did a fine job of learning all of it! 

Unfortunately, you couldn't go all the way to the final round and in your own words ended up in 3rd or 4th - but this is also a lesson you take and move along. Wins and Losses are part and parcel of life. Many a times the end result is not in our hands - what we must ensure is that we give it our best shot and that you did

I do, however, promise you that we will work very closely with you to help you try and do better and better in each spell drill as it will basically work on your core strength which is Reading and some day, for sure, you will go all the way and bring home the coveted prize

Here is the Word-wall for the month of September and we will work with you to upgrade your spelling and reading skills using this

Ebbanad - II

(This is a continuation from Ebbanad - I. Please read that before continuing here) Our next destination was the forest shack where we were to camp that night. It was a 30 minute downhill trek and we were welcomed there with gracious helpings of veg pulao and curd rice. After rejuvenating ourselves, we began the main part of the trek – through the forests. Ever since our guide had joined us, he had kept telling us stories about their encounters with elephants and tigers. It had raised our hopes of catching a glimpse of a few along the way. But the important thing to remember was that the experience of the guides had been accumulated over decades of years and by calculating the average it was obvious that our chances of seeing any animal in one day was very bleak. A Fairytale....

It was the 4th of July, I was in Mumbai looking forward to what was probably the most important day of my life. It was also the day that the Rain gods showered the might of the rains, on this island city. Little did they know that the rains were the last thing to stop me from meeting the most important girl I had ever known and to express my feelings for her. It had been raining all morning and I had kept my fingers crossed that it would eventually stop. I delayed my departure from my home for an hour in that hope, but at 11am I simply put on my jacket and left. I told her that I would be reaching at around 12:30pm, considering all the delays in the train……and it was real heartening to see her concern for me, as she made sure that I call her multiple times during my train journey from Tilaknagar to Vile-Parle .
